European Commission seeks views on sustainable algae production, consumption and innovative uses

Algae is a nutritious source of food and animal feed and is also being used to produce pharmaceuticals, bioplastics, fertilisers and biofuels to name but a few, at low impact to the environment.

The European Commission has kicked off an online consultation period on its roadmap entitled: Blue economy – towards a strong and sustainable EU algae sector. This initiative sets out how the EU can increase the sustainable production, safe consumption and innovative use of algae and algae-based products. This will help in achieving the objectives of the European Green Deal, the transition to a green, circular and carbon neutral EU, and a post Covid recovery.

Consultation is open for four weeks, from 21 December 2020 – 18 January 2021 (midnight Brussels time).
