SINTEF Ocean

SINTEF Ocean (SINTEF) is a multidisciplinary research institute within the SINTEF Group, Scandinavia’s largest independent research corporation, and contributes to innovation and industrial development along the whole fisheries and aquaculture value chain. With core competence within aquaculture biology and marine constructions, since 2008 SINTEF has conducted >30 R&D-projects on key challenges for industrial macroalgae cultivation for Norwegian and foreign customers.

Dr Jorunn Skjermo (senior scientist) has more than 20 years’ experience in aquaculture research and project coordination, extended competence in seaweed cultivation and 32 scientific papers. She is responsible for SINTEFs participation in GENIALG, strain collection in WP2, cultivation in WP3 and communication in WP7.

Dr Aleksander Handå

Dr Aleksander Handå is research manager for the Aquatic bio resources group at SINTEF. He is an internationally recognised IMTA-expert and has extensive experience in seaweed aquaculture. He is responsible for IMTA in WP3.

Dr Ole Jacob Broch

Dr Ole Jacob Broch (senior scientist) has developed the numerical seaweed model at SINTEF and is an expert in modelling of marine environments including IMTA. He is responsible for modelling in WP3 and 6.

Dr Arne Fredheim

Dr Arne Fredheim is research director for Department of Aquaculture Technology and an internationally recognised expert in offshore aquaculture. He was manager for the Centre for research-based innovation CREATE, and is also adjunct professor at NTNU. His responsibility in GENIALG will be on constructions of seaweed farms in WP3.

Dr Rasa Slizyte

Dr Rasa Slizyte (scientist) will be responsible for implementing existing amino acid analyses to analyse various seaweed in WP3.

Role in GENIALG

The “seaweed team” working on GENIALG has a major focus on 1) development of cost efficient seedlings production and cultivation technology for kelp in offshore conditions, 2) kelp cultivation in integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA), 3) development and use of 3D hydrodynamic ecosystem model SINMOD and seaweed growth models, and 4) processing technology for marine biomass including industrial scaled drying and extraction methods.
