Collaborating to unravel algae’s potential

A one-day event held in November 2018, entitled ‘Exploring Opportunities in Blue Biotech and Aquaculture’ was organised by the Industrial Biotechnology and Innovation Centre (IBioIC), the Scottish Aquaculture Innovation Centre (SAIC), Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), Zero Waste Scotland and the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS).

From around the UK, leading biotechnology companies met at SAMS, a GENIALG project partner, to learn how academia and businesses will need to collaborate in order to unravel algae’s full potential. The event gave an overview of the funding and business support available to businesses already operating and those looking for partners in the area. While algae are already being used to make packaging, food and pharmaceuticals, scientists and businesses are certain algae has a lot more potential. Some of the applications discussed included biopolymers, algal derived Omega 3 and animal food sources.

An important take home message from the meeting was the importance of sharing expertise and knowledge so that new and innovative industries and techniques can be developed.
