Algal extracts boosting shrimp natural defences March 8, 2019

Algae have many diverse biological properties that can be used to enhance animal health and welfare. OLMIX Group, one of our GENIALG partners, has extensively researched and now developed specific algal extracts that have various beneficial uses in animal care. While attending the 1st International Aquaculture Congress on Shrimp Production (Congreso Internacional Acuacultura de Camarón CIAC) 2019, OLMIX Group shared their development of new products that boost the immune system and digestive efficiency of shrimp. Biologically active molecules named MSP® are extracted from the algae through a marine algae processing chain and a unique biorefinery process, OLMIX Group is an expert in algae processing from harvest to final innovative products.

Aqua Care Manager, Maarten Jay Van Schoonhoven, said at the Congress “Algae are a source of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, minerals, pigments, vitamins and secondary metabolites. Recent trials show that these marine polysaccharides from macroalgae cell walls have a great impact in shrimp health and digestive welfare”. Results from recent trials in India, Mexico and Vietnam were presented and showed how OLMIX Group’s products had benefits such as improved growth, survival and tolerance to diseases.
